Hurricane Nicole Batters Florida
Category 1 Hurricane Makes Landfall, Brings Heavy Rain and Strong Winds
Hurricane Nicole made landfall on Florida's east coast as a Category 1 hurricane Thursday, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerous storm surge. The storm made landfall near Vero Beach just after 3 a.m., with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph.
Nicole is the first hurricane to make landfall in Florida since Hurricane Michael in 2018. The storm has caused widespread flooding and power outages across the state. According to the Florida Division of Emergency Management, more than 1 million customers were without power as of Thursday morning.
Nicole is expected to continue to weaken as it moves across the state. However, the storm is still expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to parts of Florida and Georgia.
