Karen Read: Cop Killer or Convenient Patsy?
Mansfield Woman Accused of Killing Boston Police Officer Boyfriend
Trial Continues as Questions Linger About Police Involvement
WEB Karen Read, 44, of Mansfield, is facing second-degree murder and other charges in connection with the death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John OKeefe. The trial, which began this week in Norfolk, has been marked by intense questioning of Massachusetts State Police Trooper Michael Proctor and the dismissal of one juror.
Prosecutors allege that Read shot and killed OKeefe in the back of the head as he slept in their Mansfield home in 2019. They claim that Read's motive was a combination of jealousy and anger over OKeefe's alleged infidelity.
Read's defense attorney, Alan Jackson, has argued that his client is innocent and that the prosecution's case is based on circumstantial evidence and unreliable witness testimony. Jackson has also suggested that the police may have been involved in a cover-up to protect one of their own.
The trial is expected to continue for several more weeks. The jury is now comprised of 12 members, down from the original 15. As the trial progresses, the question of whether Read is a rage-filled cop killer or the convenient patsy of a vast police cover-up remains unresolved.
